A Campout

Last weekend we went to a local campground. It was not a great weather weekend, though. We got there on Thursday night and set up camp. Mr Farmer went to work on Friday and the kids and I stayed at the campground.

It rained. It poured. So we stayed inside and watched Little House episodes. There were a couple of other kids at the campground that my kids made quick friends with. Those kids came in our little camper, too, and watched tv. They stayed for lunch. I was glad to give them something to do since they were camping in a tent.

After lunch we took out the bingo game. We played for mini donuts. This occupied several hours. The kids headed out to play in the rain since it had let up some.

Saturday we went to an auction. It rained and stormed all night, keeping Mr Farmer awake and worried.

Sunday we spent fishing. It finally quit raining. We caught a bunch of little fish, but took them to the camp site anyway to have for lunch.

Mr Farmer and the girls cleaned them while I got potato pockets ready for the fire.

Potato pockets are easy and delicious. They are just sliced potatoes, onions, ham, and butter. Add a little salt and pepper, fold up in tin foil, and pop them on the hot coals for 30-45 minutes. They were the best thing we ate the entire trip!

The fish were mostly too small to filet, so we just picked the meat from the bones. We threw the smallest of what we caught back in the lake. We got enough meat from what we cooked to satisfy everyone.

My favorite part of camping is the campfire. I love the smell. The sound. Staring into the flames and letting my mind wander. The kids liked playing in the fire. Yes, I'm a horrible parent. I sat and watched my kids catch a small stick on fire and then blow it out so they could send smoke signals. I let my kids play in the fire and I liked it!

Monday Mr Farmer went back to work while we packed up camp. Then we headed home when he got off work. This trip showed us we can survive a campout even if it storms and we have extra kids in a small camper.

  1. Fun to hear about your camping trip. I haven't been camping in years, but thinking back on it, I think it rained and stormed every time I ever camped as an adult, or maybe that was what made those times more memorable.

Your fish and potato pockets meal looked good.

    1. I think the storms will be one of the things I remember this trip for. I've considered making the potato pockets to put on the grill, but decided to keep them as a special meal reserved for camping.

  2. Looks like a very good time and it looks like a very lovely park and camp ground you stayed at. We just sold our RV and am already missing camping.

    1. You will be so close to a couple of nice ones when you retire. You may have to get another camper someday.

  3. We always loved to camp with our kids too, but we camped in a tent, well 2 tents. 6 boys means they get their own tent! lol We always hung tarps over head so if it rained we could still have a fire and play board games and such. My boys ALL played in the fire, so I guess I was a terrible mom before you were since my 6 boys are grown. lol All of our boys are great at starting fires now too, so they learned something playing in the fire all those times! lol I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy your blog!

    1. Thank you so much, Brenda. Sometimes I wonder if anyone even reads it.

Sometimes being a terrible mom is more fun and maybe actually pays off later. We used to camp in tents before kids but slowly graduated to the camper this year. Mr Farmer didn't want to camp until the kids were a bit older so we all could enjoy it more. Otherwise it's just chasing toddlers around in the mud and messing up their schedules.

  4. I read your blog all the time, don't always comment though. lol I can sit and chuckle because my kids are grown now but I can relive through you and your family. lol I loved raising our kids on the farm, and now some of our grandchildren are getting a little taste of the farm. We started camping when I was prego with our 6th son, it is a lot of work but we had the best times ever. And my boys, if there is mud around they always found it. So I just went with the flow cause I don't think I would have ever changed it! lol Enjoy those beautiful children of yours cause they grow up way to fast and before you know it you will be empty nesters, which I hate! But so enjoy the grandkids!

    1. We just made sure the shoes came off before coming in the camper. We also have dark brown covers on the furniture that are washable, so it's super easy to clean that stuff. I can't wait to enjoy more camp fires though. I missed that with all the rain and wet firewood. I'm glad you can relive your parenting days through us. I don't know how many people get to raise kids out in the middle of the country and actually embrace and love it.
